Gather Round's hot and dry weather to linger well into next week

There is a burst of summer-like temperatures heading to the southeast, from Adelaide to Sydney, to Canberra, Melbourne and Hobart, and all areas in between.

Gather Round in Adelaide should deliver four incredibly warm for April days, with temperatures rising into the 30s:

Thursday 30C and Mostly Sunny

Friday 29C and Sunny

Saturday 33C and Sunny

Sunday 32C and Sunny

The average for Adelaide at this time of year is 22C, so this is significantly above average.

The jump up in temperature across the southeast begins on Thursday and at this stage there is no end in sight. These above average days are likely to continue not just through the weekend but also into next week.

It's not unusual to get a few well above average days this late into Autumn, but a stretch that persists for a week or more is highly unusual.

A high pressure system is becoming strong and dominant, and it has decided to set up camp over the Tasman Sea. This spot means that it will direct heat from the interior of the country to sweep down into the southeast, and the high's strength and dominance means that there isn't a strong cool change to clear the heat away anytime soon.

Next week's temperature anomaly shows a large area of warmer than average temperatures spreading across the southeast

Melbourne should spend the weekend in the low 30s. The average for this time of year is just 20C.

Sydney is only on the fringe of the warmer than average area, and is set for temperatures in the mid to high 20s, which is a few degrees higher than the average of 23C.

In Hobart it's only meant to be 17C at this time of year, so a weekend with both days in the low to mid 20s will feel rather summer-like.

This extended stretch of warmth is thanks to a lack of weather systems - there aren't any fronts, troughs or lows strong enough to push the high out of the way. That also means they aren't able to bring any rain.

The next week of weather is looking incredibly dry across southeastern Australia:

Potential rain over the next week shows hardly anything for the southeast, with most of the rain affecting the southwest, the east coast and across the far north

The west has no high in the way so it can be affected by weather systems passing through, and the east coast has onshore winds with a high over the Tasman Sea, so there are showers streaming through.
