Australia's weather flip flopping from monsoonal rain to winter snow

A large part of Queensland and surrounds is covered in either Flood Watches (a heads up for future flooding) or Flood Warnings (flooding is occurring) - and the next burst of rain brings a widespread 50 to 150 mm on top of this already soaked situation.

14 different catchments are in Major Flood, the highest on the flooding scale.

Many others are in Minor to Moderate, or back on Flood Watch.

Our most recent cyclone, Cyclone Dianne, was short lived, developing late last week then crossing the northwest coast early on Saturday. It had an impact at the point of crossing as all cyclones do, but the left over rain from this system is having a bigger and far reaching impact as it tracks across northern Australia.

Wednesday is the day likely to see the heaviest of the rain over a large part of Queensland - and Brisbane and the southeast aren't shielded from this one as the rain stretches right down into northeast NSW.. as far south as Port Macquarie.

But the situation will improve as the rest of the week plays out. Watch the map to see how the area of rain contracts northeastwards on Thursday and Friday.

By later Thursday and on Friday there is hardly any rain left in Queensland's southeast or across the southern inland parts of the state. The heaviest falls are only on Wednesday into Thursday morning.

If we zoom over the southwest of the country there is rain in the outlook here too - likely from about Friday through to Monday.

This is much needed rain as we transition from the dry summer months into autumn and the first signs of regular rain from cold fronts.

A large part of the southwest is likely to see 25 to 50 mm, which would be a nice drop to begin the season.

A large part of southwestern WA has the potential for 25 to 50 mm of rain over the next week

It's a different story in the southeast of the country where cold fronts are likely to strike too, but instead of bringing soaking rain for drought ravaged areas, it's just a lot of cold air.

Showers with wintry hail, those balls of ice that bounce when they hit the ground.

Chilly nights after the showers pass, perfect for lighting the fire.

This sort of weather translates to actual snow up in the alps. In this weather pattern there isn't a lot of wet weather extending far inland, so the snowfall totals are limited on the mainland alps, but if you're in Tasmania and would like to see a winter wonderland, there won't be far to drive to see a land covered in white.
