The models are aligning with significant snow from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday morning

There is rain coming for the alps... but there is a fabulous amount of snow once we've gotten through the first part.

The models are aligning that the change over should occur on Tuesday afternoon. It should turn from rain to snow on the peaks, and rapidly lower through alpine elevations.

For the 'clear' precipitation part - it's not great, we'll see 25 to 50 mm, locally 75mm. This is thanks to rain steadily increasing later on Monday, with the burst of heavy falls on Tuesday morning. The cold air doesn't catch up to this part... but it arrives shortly after.

As it changes to snow the intensity should ease, but we are not done. The intensity increases again on Wednesday, thanks to a small low crossing either Bass Strait (which would produce huge snowfalls) or at least near Tasmania (which produces moderate snowfalls). This increase in instability coincides with the coldest air, and some models have the coldest part bringing lighter snow down to around 600 metres (possibly 300 metres in parts of Tasmania).

Once it has changed to snow, we have the potential for 30 to 70 cm across the alps. And the slight potential for totals around the one metre mark. This higher amount is if that low comes nice and close.

-> So, there is some damage on Monday into Tuesday morning, but once it turns, it turns good, with significant snow to follow, particularly on Wednesday.
