Huge snowfalls transforming the alpine resorts this long weekend

This weather system is locked and loaded.

We have the perfect trifecta of lingering low pressure.. moisture.. and bitterly cold air, all working together to bring exceptional snowfalls - ensuring a tremendous start to the snow season.

A cold front is just the first act. Act two is the really exciting bit. A cut off low... cut off from the fast moving westerly winds to our south... so it can slowly wander by, letting the snow continue for longer. A feed of tropical moisture interacting with Antarctic air, all adding up to perfect conditions.

The snow begins spreading through on Friday night, and once it gets going it will quickly become heavier and stay that way for the rest of the long weekend.

Latest guidance shows significant totals each day. Each map is the 24 hour precipitation totals up until 10pm that night. The blue lines show how low the snow should be falling at that 10pm stage... colour coded into light blue for higher alps... darker blue for the rest of the alps and onto the ranges (1500m to 900m) and purple for the properly cold air, below 600m.
