As we shiver through the shortest days of the year, spare a thought for those in Canberra. It was -5C this morning, and is likely to be below freezing each and every morning for the rest of the week, across the weekend and into early next week.
Add the risk of fog each day and that’s a long stretch of cold and dark. The fog in Canberra can sometimes take until mid-afternoon to clear, leaving just a few precious hours of sunlight.

There is a lot of rain coming in to the west today, kicking off an extended stretch of wet weather. Perth picked up 25mm in the 24 hours to 9am, and while the heaviest falls are easing on Wednesday, there’s still showers passing through on Thursday which could make for an intermittently wet game of footy on Thursday night.
The next big burst of wet weather arrives in the west on Friday and continues into the weekend. Parts of the west are likely to exceed 100mm in total over the course of a week.

While it’s raining in the west, the southeast is under high pressure, with frosty nights and sunny days. Melbourne could reach 16C on the weekend, in the sunshine, which is rather pleasant for this time of year!
The next big rain system arrives in the southeast early next week. Another top up of rain for our farmers and gardens, and snow for the alps.

Sydney’s in a lengthy stretch of dry weather that slowly warms each day. By the weekend, top temperatures are up in the high teens, and it should rise over 20 degrees early next week. Meanwhile Brisbane is in a stretch of low to mid 20 degree days, with the chilly mornings becoming a distant memory.
