Fresh Select and Jane’s Weather - A Visionary Partnership for Agricultural Innovation
John Said
Fresh Select
When it comes to revolutionising how Australian farmers harness weather forecast data, few collaborations have been as impactful as the partnership between John Said, CEO of Fresh Select, and Jane Bunn, CEO of Jane’s Weather. As one of the founding collaborators of Jane’s Weather PRO, John’s early adoption and invaluable feedback were instrumental in shaping the platform into the hyper-local forecasting solution that farmers rely on today.
The Partnership's Visionary Beginnings
The journey began at Fresh Select’s Werribee South farm, where John Said and Jane Bunn struck up conversion to ensure Jane’s Weather PRO was tailored to meet the unique challenges faced by vegetable growers. Fresh Select, a leading producer of broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts, have relied on very nearby BoM weather stations observations to adapt their Jane’s hyper-local AI forecasts with no weather stations currently on farm.
In the early days, John’s insights provided critical guidance to refine features, including
- User-Friendly App Interfaces - Ensuring weather data was accessible and actionable for growers in the field.
- Custom Alerts for Agriculture - Identifying the need for timely localised forecast notifications.
- Hyper-Local Forecasting Accuracy - Highlighting the importance of precise, farm-level insights.
“Fresh Select’s early adoption and collaboration helped us persue a platform that is truly for farmers, by farmers.” - Jane Bunn, CEO, Jane’s Weather
Fresh Select Today are Expanding Hyper-Local Precision
Today, Fresh Select is taking the next step in weather innovation by installing on-site weather stations at their Werribee South location. This pilot program will further enhance forecast accuracy and pave the way for similar rollouts across their other farms.
Currently, five Fresh Select team members at Werribee use Jane’s Weather PRO daily, benefiting from hyper-local forecasts for rainfall, wind, and spraying conditions. The planned integration of weather stations will;
- Enhanced crop-specific forecasts, improving treatment timing for pests and diseases.
- Optimised spraying conditions forecasts with a real-time hyper local forecast.
- Better resource management with the best forecast will further minimise risk and maximise yield.
Key Benefits for Fresh Select
- Hyper-Local Insights
By transitioning to on farm weather stations, Fresh Select will ensure that their forecasts are fine-tuned to their specific microclimate, adding that missing piece of observed weather data to their Jane's Weather AI Forecast to get a more accurate forecast, more often - at their unique spot. - Custom Alerts
Jane’s Weather allows Fresh Select to set up alerts for farm-specific variables like rainfall thresholds, spray conditions, frost risk, ensuring timely action. - Future-Ready Integration
With plans to expand Jane’s Weather PRO to other Fresh Select farms, the team is setting a benchmark for precision agriculture across their network.
A Glimpse of the Future - Scaling Innovation
Fresh Select is also influencing Jane’s Weather’s roadmap by advocating for features like
- Pest and Disease Forecasting for conditions conducive to clubroot, aphids, and powdery mildew for various crops.
- Simplified Farm Setup with almost all major weather station installations now enjoying seamless integration.
- Enterprise Solutions by rolling out hyper-local forecasts and alert systems across the other Fresh Select farms in the future.
“Jane’s Weather PRO is transforming how we manage weather risks, from day-to-day operations to long-term planning. We’re excited to see how this partnership continues to grow.”
Why Weather Insights Matter for Vegetable Growers
For farmers like Fresh Select, access to accurate, user friendly, localised weather forecast data is essential for protecting crops and maximizing yields. Jane’s Weather PRO delivers the tools growers need to stay ahead of changeable weather on farm.
