The next big snow system is brewing - with a cold outbreak due this weekend

The stretch of spring-like conditions ends with a cold front on Tuesday. This won't bring anything significant (and there isn't much snow) - but the weather systems lining up from Friday night onwards looks much more promising.

We've had a stretch of warm sunshine as high pressure moved through to the east and winds turned northerly.

On Tuesday a cold front slides through - so while it delivered more than 50mm as it crossed WA, now it's running out of moisture and instability, and we won't see much. Good, because it has limited cold air with it too.

-> Later Tuesday into Wednesday morning brings light falls, as snow above around 1700 metres.

The next high gets its skates on and takes a much shorter time to move through to the east.

-> By Thursday we are back in warmth and sunshine.

This high moves a lot further north than the last one, and the trajectory of the next front has it peaking in the east rather than the west. There is significant cold air once the front arrives, and there are further fronts set to pass through, keeping the snow coming across the weekend into early next week.

-> Once the cold air hits late on Friday night we have several days of snow to look forward to. It's properly cold with snow possible to around 800 metres on Saturday, only rising to 1000 metres on Sunday and 1200 metres by next Tuesday. This should deliver 20 to 50 cm across the resorts.
