Quiet weather pattern brings mostly dry conditions and lets heat spread far and wide

Over the past week we've seen significant rain over the northeastern half of the country, associated with a persistant trough, and low moving off the NSW coast. This weather pattern has now moved on.

Late last week and over the weekend, rain began falling in the southwest, adding up to widespread 25 to 50 mm with locally heavier falls.

Rainfall totals from the past week

The current weather pattern shows a very broad area of high pressure.

Firstly, cradling troughs in the west, continuing the rain for another day or two.

Secondly, blocking any tropical moisture from reaching cold fronts that are crossing the southeast.

If you're wanting rain over southeastern Australia, the blocking part won't help you out, as it doesn't let any rain spread inland. But the cradling high is perfect for spreading rain inland, and producing a good soak as it persists for several days in a row (as the southwest has just seen).

From here, the highs are going to split, with one large high crossing the southeast and moving out to the Tasman Sea, and the other remaining south of WA.

The troughs move inland in the west, contracting the rain away from the southwest - but there is another system on the horizon - due very late in the week/Saturday.

The southeast continues on the mostly dry trend, especially inland. There is nothing in the current outlook to bring any rain inland in southeastern Australia.

The coastal part of southeast QLD and northeast NSW move into a pattern of onshore winds and showers streaming through. It'll add up over the course of a week, but doesn't spread much inland at all.

Potential rainfall over the next week

With a fairly quiet weather pattern this week, and the high moving over the Tasman Sea, that encourages heat to surge down into the south, spreading right through to the southeast.

It doesn't arrive in the southeast until about Thursday... but may stick around through to early next week.
