Cold outbreak clipping the alps mid to late this week

There is another cold outbreak brewing.

That was one of the ingredients in the last major snowfall - but this one looks very different.

It has plenty of cold air, bucket loads of it. We will see low level snow in Tasmania.

However... this weather pattern has high pressure in the way. There is a huge ridge of it over Australia that acts like a block/a stop sign/an unfriendly bouncer at a club, and won't let this cold air, or the precipitation, move very far northwards.

On Wednesday we may see snow in southern VIC to around 1600 metres (ie not reaching any resort), and around 1800 metres in northern VIC/Snowy Mountains.

Thursday is our best shot as the high angles itself to work better for the alps, with snow to around 1500 metres, possibly 1400 metres in southern VIC, and around 1600 metres in the north/Snowy's. This may bring 5 to 10 cm of snow.

At the same time, much of Tasmania should have snow below 600 metres - and lots of precipitation, so it looks great in Tassie.

-------

Things rapidly warm up over the weekend as the high moves to the east and puts us in northerly winds.

There is a big weather system brewing for early next week. It is a full week away at this stage so there is low confidence - but it won't begin pretty. It may end very well, but there will be a lot to get through before that arrives.
