Today's gusty cold front is the first in a series of them, with the pattern likely to persist over the next week.

Cold fronts are usual for this time of year across southern Australia, but a week long stretch where they keep affecting one part of southern Australia is unusual - there is often a high that brings a break before the next onslaught.

Most of the next week's activity will be focused on the southeast, as high pressure does bring a break to the southwest from time to time.

Today's cold front has tight isobars (the lines of pressure on the map) indicating the windy conditions. There are Severe Weather Warnings for damaging winds in five states and territories, from WA through to NSW and the ACT (affected areas shown in yellow on the satellite image).

The next strong front arrives in the southeast later Wednesday/on Thursday. This one is a cold outbreak.

There are weaker follow up fronts/troughs on Friday and Saturday, then the next strong one arrives in the southeast later on Sunday, with another strong one to follow early next week.

That's a full week of activity - and besides the gusty and sometimes freezing conditions, it should bring a handy drop of rain. Anything yellow on this map is more than 25mm, anything deep yellow is more than 50mm, while the orangey colours indicate 75-100mm+.

Less for the southwest as this area has the breaks from the high pressure. Most of the western wet weather is likely to be this weekend.
