Long Range
Pacific Ocean
How it works
We entered La Nina in October 2020 and will slowly come out of it, moving into Neutral for Autumn and Winter 2021.
The brown area indicates "El Nino". On the Sea Temperature Anomaly map there would be a warm wiggly line, offset by cool water off Queensland. This would encourage the Pacific Ocean to send the tropical moisture away from Australia.
The green area indicates "La Nina". Warm water off Queensland and cool water in the wiggly line, so the Pacific Ocean sends tropical moisture towards Australia.
La Nina encourages rain in Australia, but you need low pressure to turn the moist air into rain. The following graphs tell us more about that.
El Nino makes it much harder for low pressure to deliver rain, as there is a limited supply of moisture.
