Jane Bunn's Snow Commentary

For the mainland Australian Alps

Updated daily throughout the snow season, around 6am.

Summary:

A heavy rain system in NSW is only just grazing the NSW alps with light precipitation at times on Sunday and Monday, falling as snow up high. Much of the Victorian alps are sunny. Sunshine returns to the NSW alps on Tuesday, before a weak but cold system brings a bit of snow later Thursday into Saturday. Sunshine returns by next Sunday.

Details:

The split continues from west to east. Western parts (Baw Baw, Buller) are dry and sunny under high pressure. Eastern parts (Perisher, Thredbo, Charlotte) are on the very edge of a heavy rain system in NSW, which only brings light precipitation at times to the alps on Sunday and Monday. It should continue to fall as snow above around 1700m and drizzly rain below. Central parts (Hotham, Falls) are in the middle, seeing some of the cloud from NSW, and some of the sun from the west.

I'm expecting up to 5cm of snow up high in the east on Sunday/Monday.

The high that is making the west dry and sunny takes over all alpine areas for Tuesday and Wednesday. Expect sunshine and light winds.

On Thursday the next weather system approaches. A trough or weak front, but with a proper pool of cold air. Sunshine continues for much of Thursday, then cloud builds late. Snow is possible in western parts in the late afternoon and evening, falling as rain below about 1500m.

Most of the snow falls on Friday, when it looks cloudy for much of the time. Snow could fall down to around 1200m. It continues at times on Saturday, mainly in central parts and the east (Hotham to Perisher), as sunshine breaks through in the afternoon.

I'm expecting 2 to 10 cm from Thursday night to Saturday.

The next high comes in for a sunny Sunday. The next weather system looks to begin later Monday/Tuesday.

I'll keep you updated in the morning's until Wednesday 6th July, then back to evening's.
